Underwater inspection and NDT

Introduction

Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) crack testing involves determining the extent of a crack in ferrous metals which may not be visible to the eye. When the extremities of the crack are located often stop drilling technique is required or other supplementary preventative measures.

MPI crack testing can be carried out in the wet or dry using FN Diving magnetic particle inspection (MPI) UV crack testing system in combination with trained personnel. Some cracks can extend above the waterline requiring the MPI to be deployed above and below the waterline and this is achievable using our MPI systems.

Objectives

Upon the successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:-

    • Have a very good background in underwater cutting and welding techniques.
    • Review & improve the underwater cutting techniques and be able to know the operation, requirements, advantages & disadvantages as well as the material consumption of oxygen-arc cutting technique.
    • Identify the electrode amperage & oxygen requirements of exothermic electrodes and understand the materials required for Kerie cable.
    • Learn the operation and materials used for the underwater shielded metal-arc cutting techniques.
    • Acquire in-depth knowledge of underwater welding including the mechanical barriers, shielded metal-arc welding, wet welding, and shipbuilding materials.
    • List the materials used in underwater shielded metal-arc welding and be able to emphasize the procedures & techniques for underwater shielded metal-arc welding.
    • Identify the various underwater arc cutting and welding equipment used and be able to determine the different welding accessories applicable for underwater cutting and welding.
    • Recognize the importance of safety in underwater cutting and welding and be able to explain the general precautions for underwater cutting and welding.
    • Emphasize the importance of personal safety in diving using the diving dress.
    • Learn the underwater cutting equipment used and be able to demonstrate the procedure on cutting underwater with a thermic lance.
    • Know MAPP gas cutting, loss of voice communications, and friction stud welder.

Training Methodology

This is an interactive course. There will be open question and answer sessions, regular group exercises and activities, videos, case studies, and presentations on best practice. Participants will have the opportunity to share with the facilitator and other participants on what works well and not so well for them, as well as work on issues from their own organizations. The online course is conducted online using MS-Teams/ClickMeeting.

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable for technical and non-technical personnel dealing with underwater cutting & welding such as managers, engineers, administration, and supervision staff. Further, the course is important for applied scientists and technologists interested in underwater cutting & welding techniques.

Course Outline

FN Diving performs the following underwater NDT Inspection methods when needed with Diver Technicians holding CSWIP 3.1 up to 3.4.

  • Visual
  • MPI/Magnetic Particle Inspections
