Introduction
This training course has been designed to provide a clear and perfect understanding of power system protection schemes and devices including protection relays, fuses, circuit breakers, and other protective devices. In modern power systems, nowadays, protection systems play a significant role in efficiently running plant operations, utility switching, industry load transfer, maintenance programs, and investment policies. The outcome is to minimize system outages and to keep the maintenance and repair costs at reasonable prices. With the advancement of technology, now there is a need for many system operators, electrical engineers (at all levels of proficiency), asset engineers, and project engineers to learn more about the power system protection concepts, logic, and applications to acceptable levels. These days, advanced protection devices are considered as Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) in all modern smart grids where protection schemes, logic, and relay settings rely heavily on a good understanding of communication protocols, inter-tripping schemes, etc. This Electrical Engineering training course will provide sufficient theoretical background in a simple language together with a step-by-step procedure to analyze electric faults, their consequences, and recommended solutions through industry-based practical worked examples and mini-projects to achieve an optimized and coordinated operation of protective devices in typical moderately complex power systems.
This training course will highlight:
- Electric Fault Types and Fault Calculations
- Load Studies
- Protection Relay Types and Functions
- Protection Logic and Settings
- Coordination of Protection Devices
Objectives
- Select fit-for-the-purpose protection relays and other related devices
- Calculate fault levels and loadings of feeders and branches
- Develop and analyze typical power systems and their associated protection systems
- Analyze protection logics and coordination between protection devices
- Establish communication between protection devices and controllers
At the end of this training course, you will learn how to:
Training Methodology
This is an interactive course. There will be open question and answer sessions, regular group exercises and activities, videos, case studies, and presentations on best practice. Participants will have the opportunity to share with the facilitator and other participants on what works well and not so well for them, as well as work on issues from their own organizations. The online course is conducted online using MS-Teams/ClickMeeting.
